How to Keep Cockroaches Out of Your Home for Good

Posted on

Cockroaches are every homeowner's nightmare. When they strike, you have to find a strategy to eliminate them and maintain a clean household. However, getting rid of roaches isn't a straightforward affair. It requires more than just using some powerful insecticide. In fact, continued use of pesticide can expose your family to toxic fumes which can lead to respiratory conditions. The best way to permanently eliminate these annoying creatures is by following the simple tips:

Keep the house clean

Roaches thrive in dirty environments, and failure to clean your kitchen, bathroom, and other parts of the house is a sure way of inviting these pests. You have to make sure that the house is spic-and-span. Cockroaches are usually attracted to food and beverage spills, and grease; therefore, ensure that you wipe down the cooking appliances, kitchen counters, and splashbacks after cooking. Additionally, make sure that the dining table is clean at all times. Do not leave anything to chance as far as cleanliness is concerned.

Keep food in sealed containers

Young roaches are small enough to get into your cabinets, loosely closed packaging, and food boxes, and contaminate your food. To avoid this ensure that you store all the food in sealable glass, metal, or plastic containers. Additionally, limit food storage to one area of the house. For instance, only use the kitchen pantry and cabinets for food storage. If there is an infestation, it will be easier to manage it as opposed to when food is stored in various parts of the home.

Take note of water sources

Besides food, roaches are usually attracted to wet areas. You can get rid of them by eliminating water sources that may act as breeding grounds. If there are any plumbing leaks, make sure that you fix them. Also, drain any wet surfaces such as the kitchen sink, counters, bathroom floor, and tub every night before going to bed. Do not leave damp cleaning sponges lying openly in the kitchen as well. You can invest in a sealable container where you place them after cleaning dishes.

Cover your garbage bin

Most cockroach infestations start from the trash can which contains food remains and food packaging containers. Ensure that your garbage bin is clean at all times to keep away roaches. You can invest in a bin liner and use bleach or baking powder to get rid of the foul smell from bad foods. Also, ensure that the trash is covered at all times so that it does not attract roaches, rats, and raccoons. Make sure that garbage is picked up at least once a week as well.

Follow these simple but practical tips to eliminate roaches for good. However, if you have a severe infestation, you should contact a pest control company for assistance.
